【Flooring basics chapter (II)】Installing Hardwood Flooring

There are several different techniques for installing Hardwood Floors. Which one is chosen generally depends on what kind of sub-floor you have, based on the house platform, i.e. slab or pier & beam.

Let’s imagine an hardwood floor install in a classic pier and beam home, frequently found in older parts of Dallas and Ft. Worth. In this design, the sub-floor straddles beams that run across the foundation, keeping your floor above the ground. In most cases, though not all (depending on the age of the house), the sub-floor is some sort of plywood.

If this is the case, we first make sure the plywood base is sturdy and thick enough to handle the kind of flooring desired. That is, can it take and hold the nails that will attach the floor to it? This is usually the case, but needs to be checked.

The installer will then lay down a moisture barrier, usually roofing felt and perhaps an additional plastic sheeting if there tends to be moisture issues under the house. After that, the hardwood flooring is laid out in a proximate design, mixing long and short boards and different shades in an eye-pleasing pattern. When these pieces look right, the flooring is nailed into the sub-floor, one piece at a time, interlocking them with the tongue-&-groove to make a smooth surface.

As the floor in installed, a gap is left on the perimeter approximately a quarter of an inch wide. This is to allow the floor to “breathe,” that is, expand and contract with the weather and the humidity. So, following the nail-down, the gap is covered with a baseboard or a quarter-round.

If it is a pre-finished floor, the job is done (after clean-up, of course). If it is a raw hardwood, then we move on to the finishing, which we will discuss at another time.

With those two points in mind, you can then decide what the best styles of closet doors will be for your particular room. 

Be room aware - While storage is highly important, if the wardrobe is part of a bedroom, the bedroom is the priority. An oversized monolithic wardrobe can ruin a bedroom resulting in early demolition because the bedroom feels too cramped. A way of avoiding this problem is illustrated in this photo. By creating a dressing table in the middle of the wardrobe space, the walls of wardrobe don’t close in the room.

Hardwoodflooring boards come in many different sizes and shapes. The most common species in North Texas floors is red oak, and the most commonly seen width is three inches.

Flooring pieces come in different lengths, usually from one foot to five feet. These are mixed and matched to give texture and design to the laid floor. Hardwood floor planks also come in different widths; however for a solid hardwood floor, you won’t want a wood that is less than an inch thick. (These standards are different for laminate flooring – but we will discuss Pergo and its cousins in a later post.)

The choice of flooring width is both esthetic and practical, and can run anywhere from 2 inches to 7 inches. Your selection depends on the size of the room, on your personal tastes, your species and, of course, your budget. (The wider the pieces are, the more expensive they can be).

Your choice can also depend on the color, for different species of wood come in differing color groups.

Wood flooring also comes in varying degrees of hardness. The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and wear, and ranges from the softest Eastern Pine to the toughest Brazilian Ebony. Your choice can be based on foot traffic in different areas of the house, for example.
