Extend a headboard - Reclaimed timber is used to clad a wall that doubles as a grand headboard. It screens off a section of thebedroom that could be used as a walk-in wardrobe, an en suite or hidden storage, but utilises the wall to add design value to the main space. Other textures and hues are natural and soft to complement the reclaimed look.

Here, the designer has built walls that double up as storage on the eaves side. By bringing the wardrobe wall forward, they have squared off the bedroom beyond and created a mini walk-inwardrobe. Mirrors on either side of the walk-through reflect light and blend the edge of the wardrobe into the rest of the room, while of course helping the owner to get dressed in the morning.

The headboard is slightly recessed, providing a niche for the bed to sit in. One-of-a-kind cast aluminum door pulls were sourced from DuVerre Hardware, and the plush gray rug is from Lanart.

There are a number of reasons one might choose a prefinished Engineered wood floor for their home over a solid hardwood product:
1. Engineered flooring provides most of the advantages of a solid hardwood floor, beauty, durability, warmth. And, once the floor is down it’s difficult to tell whether it is solid or engineered flooring.
2. The prefinish on an engineered hardwood is sturdy and provides a quicker installation time than on-site finishing. In fact, it can cut the install time in half over an on-site finishing job.
3. If the floor is above grade, no moisture barrier is needed to maintain your warranty. The plywood “platform” that makes up the bulk of the flooring product acts as a buffer against moisture issues coming from the sub-floor.
4. If you are installing on a concrete sub-floor, then no plywood sub-floor is needed. This allows for a reduction of height differences between your wood floor and other surfaces in the house, such as tile or linoleum. This also saves both time and money.
5. It’s significantly less expensive. The product itself costs less than a solid wood floor. Then the install costs less because there is no need for a moisture barrier.
6. It’s “greener.” Since an engineered hardwood floor uses thinner strips of the wood itself, impact on old growth forests is reduced. The plywood is made up of quick-growth forest products.

Five Thing To Determine If Laminate Flooring Is Right For You

You want to get rid of that raggedy carpet?
Sick of that ugly tile that came with the house? You may be asking yourself the following questions about laminate flooring:
1. What do you mean by laminate? Isn’t that Pergo?
“Laminate flooring” is to Pergo as “bathroom tissue” is to Kleenex. It’s a brand name, and a good one, but there are many other good brands to choose from.
2. So what is laminate flooring, anyway?
Laminte is not made of wood, but is in fact a series of layers of pictures of wood pressed together to make a sturdy surface. This picture layer is securely attached to an HDF (High Density Fiberboard) platform that gives the floor depth and strength. It is not to be confused with “engineered hardwood flooring” which is a veneer of real hardwood on attached to a plywood platform.
3. What about cost?
Laminate flooring is a great choice for the budget-conscious buyer. It can be considerably less expensive than solid hardwood or engineered hardwood. And it is a floating floor so the installation cost is up to 40% less as well.
4. Is it a good floor?
Laminate flooring is extremely scratch resistant. It is a recommended choice at Lumber Liquidators for folks with concerns about their big dog’s nails. The better laminate flooring (and the quality has improved in the few decades it has been on the market) is sturdy and quiet.
5. I’ve heard laminate floors are noisy to walk on. Is that true?
Generally, NO! Not if installed correctly.
As stated before, manufacturing has improved over the years. However, there is still a wide variety of qualities available. The main difference is the thickness of the product – it can range from 6 mm to 12mm, and the thicker the better, generally. A quality 12mm laminate floor with a good pad underneath is a great floor. This writer had one in his very large living room and kitchen for several years and was very impressed. (Thatwas “Pergo,” by the way.)
So laminate flooring installation may be the best investment for YOUR home!

【Flooring basics chapter (VI)】Can I Install New Wood to My Existing Hardwood Floor?

Say you like your hardwood floor so much in your living room you’d like to extend it into a neighboring room or two. “Can I do that?” you ask

In many – if not MOST cases – the answer is YES! A Texas Hardwood Flooring installation supervisor had just such an experience with a customer in North Dallas.

The wood was a very common hardwood to this area, a 2-1/4” wide x ¾” thick red oak. This made the job fairly simple:

First the Texas Hardwood Flooring’s installation craftsmen took out some strips of the old wood and laced the new, raw red oak hardwood into the existing floor. This meant that there was not an abrupt change in pattern.
When that new wood had settled, the newly installed hardwood AND the old wood was sanded, and
Then all the hardwood flooring was stained and polyurethaned right on site so that all the wood matched color.

Pre-finished Installation v. In-Situ Finishing

When installing a nail-down floor, there are a couple of purchasing options, as mentioned in an earlier.

For the quickest and easiest process, you buy a product that is finished in the factory after it is cut and formed, i.e. pre-finished hardwood flooring. Most species of wood can come in a pre-finished (aka factory-finished) state. Then your installer lays down the floor and after clean up, – voila! – you are done!

The biggest advantage of this process is that less time is needed to do the job, since the finish is already done before the wood gets there. A down-side is that there are gaps between the hardwood pieces (“calling-card” width is the industry standard for a successful installs).

On the other hand, some folks prefer the “old-fashioned” method of installing a raw hardwood floor and finishing it on-site. The benefit to this is that the floor has a smoother texture, as the finish crosses from piece to piece of wood, leaving a floor with no gaps at all.

This process takes longer, but visually is well worth the effort. It involves installing the wood, and then letting it “settle” for a week to ten days, finding its place in the room(s) and adjusting to the local climate. Then the installer/finisher comes in and sands and stains the floor to the desired color.

When that is dry, the installer puts on a coat of polyurethane, followed by a second and sometimes a third coat of poly. This leaves the with a beautiful, rich finish, bringing out the grain and beauty of the natural wood.

【Flooring basics chapter (III)】More on the Basic Installation Process

There are several different techniques for installing Hardwood Floors. Which one is chosen generally depends on what kind of sub-floor you have, based on the house platform, i.e. slab or pier & beam.

Let’s imagine an hardwood floor install in a classic pier and beam home, frequently found in older parts of Dallas and Ft. Worth. In this design, the sub-floor straddles beams that run across the foundation, keeping your floor above the ground. In most cases, though not all (depending on the age of the house), the sub-floor is some sort of plywood.

If this is the case, we first make sure the plywood base is sturdy and thick enough to handle the kind of flooring desired. That is, can it take and hold the nails that will attach the floor to it? This is usually the case, but needs to be checked.

The installer will then lay down a moisture barrier, usually roofing felt and perhaps an additional plastic sheeting if there tends to be moisture issues under the house. After that, the hardwood flooring is laid out in a proximate design, mixing long and short boards and different shades in an eye-pleasing pattern. When these pieces look right, the flooring is nailed into the sub-floor, one piece at a time, interlocking them with the tongue-&-groove to make a smooth surface.

As the floor in installed, a gap is left on the perimeter approximately a quarter of an inch wide. This is to allow the floor to “breathe,” that is, expand and contract with the weather and the humidity. So, following the nail-down, the gap is covered with a baseboard or a quarter-round.

If it is a pre-finished floor, the job is done (after clean-up, of course). If it is a raw hardwood, then we move on to the finishing, which we will discuss at another time.
